Impending Nazi downfall hangs over the forced merriment at the Führer's 56th birthday, held in a claustrophobic bunker.
While explosions shake the ceiling, Hitler gets agitated about his birthday cake, Eva Braun dreams about her marriage to the Führer, Goebbels lectures on the importance of propaganda and minister for the airforce (Luftwaffe) Goering won't go anywhere without one of his impressive uniforms. No one seems the least bit worried about all those that they have sent to their deaths.
When suicide becomes inevitable, a decision must be made about the children in the bunker. Hitler is more worried about his dog.
The story follows historical events closely. It tells about people in an extreme situation. It confronts the audience with the question whether you may feel any sympathy for any of the characters in this play.
Besides that, it is a play about denial. Denial of defeat, of responsability and of nearness of death.
