Neville Tranter portrays Molière, as a man torn between the demands of daily life and his genius
Molière could get people to laugh about their own shortcomings, but when he became famous and well known, and somebody wrote a satirical piece about him he tried to get it forbidden. His plays were populated by jealous old fellows who were sometimes fooled and sometimes not, by their much too young wives, like Molière himself.
Without the support of the court nothing was possible. Therefore it was of the upmost importance to please the king, Louis Quatorze, le Roi Soleil (Sun King).
Molière felt torn: between his artistic ambitions and his desire for satire on one side, and on the other, his own survival and that of his theatre company.
Neville Tranter was inspired by the work of Molière and by the traditions of the commedia dell'arte. He uses rapping puppets. He makes officials blush and Moliere plays his own dying scene. The puppeteer himself is spanked and humiliated by his creations, fights for his own survival and brings Molière to life once again.
In Molière by Stuffed Puppet Theatre past and present mingle. One could wonder whether artists nowadays are so much more independant from the whims and wishes of those who decide about the funding.

Avec "Molière", le Stuffed Puppet Theatre a laissé, une nouvelle fois, son public pantois d'admiration devant tant de talent et de maitrise du sujet.
